Congratulations to the Winfield Softball team!

Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc, and The Putnam Herald are pleased to congratulate the Winfield High School Softball team!

In a display of unparalleled skill, determination, and teamwork, the Winfield Softball Team secured a resounding victory in the State Championship this past Thursday. Undeterred by the challenges they faced, this talented group of athletes delivered an exceptional performance that is a first in the history of the program.

The team's success did not materialize overnight. It was the result of relentless dedication, countless hours of practice, and a shared commitment to excellence. Led by their exceptional coaching staff and the roster of seven talented seniors, they developed a bond that would prove unbreakable. Last season they found themselves on the doorstep of the state championship but couldn’t wrap it up and finished runner-up against the defending champs, Herbert Hoover. They came into this season ready to finish what they started. “This is the most consistent team we have had in a long time,” said Head Coach Steve Hensley, “I’ve been working with this senior class since they were 8-9 years old. The biggest thing about them is that they are a selfless group. When you get to the end of a ball game, all they want to do is win even if it means they have to sacrifice something. They don’t care, they just want to win.”

As the post-season unfolded, the Winfield Softball Team demonstrated their determination. Macie Boggess, their senior pitcher, kept them in a lot of games to give their offense a chance to score. In the championship, she fired a five-hit shutout, struck out eight, and had no walks. The team wanted to start out fast and get the momentum. They had six hits, senior Ella Nelson led the team with two hits in three at-bats. Georgia Moulder, senior, had a double in the first inning, Alex Hurley, junior, hit a sacrifice bunt in order to advance Georgia to third, and was able to score thanks to a hit from senior Chloe Kimble. In the bottom of the fifth Alex hit a single then Maci hit a home run to give them the separation they needed and increased their lead to 3-0. In the final inning, Hoover hit a fly ball to Alex Hurley for the first out, Maci struck out the second hitter, and the last out came from a ground ball to senior shortstop Mianna Oglesby who threw to senior first baseman Kristen Hensley for the out which ended the game!

Their victory brings pride to their school and community and instills a sense of belief in the power of teamwork and tenacity. Congratulations to all the athletes that played a role in the team's success and we extend our heartfelt wishes to the seniors who have played their last game in the Winfield jersey. We wish them good luck in their next steps in life!
