The Lady Dragons Girl’s basketball had a successful trip down south to the Carolina Invitational winning the Palmetto division championship. The Dragons slayed the likes of North Myrtle Beach, Beaufort, and Keenan High Schools in rout to winning the tournament and placing three players on the all tournament team. One standout player that helped the dragons conquer the competition was center Haleigh Legg. Legg captured the tournament MVP while scoring an average of 18.6 points over the three games. The Dragons are flying high from their successful Christmas break and are hoping to continue their winning ways back home.
When asked about what motivates her, Haleigh responded, “My mother has always pushed me and has really helped me play up to my potential. She’s very supportive and helps to pick me up when I’m down and cheer me on during tough times.” When asked about her play as a junior compared to her senior year Haleigh responded, “My confidence and leadership has improved. Being a senior I know I have to set the right example to my other teammates. Another thing Coach James has helped with is not sweating the small stuff and being locked in during crucial moments at the end of the game.”
The Lady Dragons returned many of last year’s players who fell short of a state tournament birth losing in the regional play to Spring Valley. Again the Dragons and Head Coach Scott James played a hard early schedule to prepare his team for tough contests ahead in the MSAC. Playing some of the top teams in and outside the state the Dragons have won four games in a row and playing their best basketball of the year. When asked about Haleigh’s play this year Coach James said, “She gives us a strong presence in the post on both sides of the ball. She does a great job scoring in the paint, rebounding, and distributing the ball for offensive opportunities. She has stepped up hugely as a senior leader and it is reflected in the rest of our team.” When asked about his team this year, Coach James said, “The girls have brought a never say die attitude to this season. Last year left a salty taste in our mouth and we know we belong in the state tournament. Every time we break a huddle we say, state champs.” Coach James and the Dragons are on a quest to win the MSAC championship and ultimately make the AAA state tournament.
Haleigh currently has a 3.8 GPA and is the daughter of Jessica and Ty Hunt. Haleigh plans to attend Marshall University and study Pharmacy at the conclusion of her senior year.
Please look for other local high school athletes to be named in next week’s Female Gamer of the Week Sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. & The Putnam Herald.
