Male Gamer of the Week – Hayden Shelton of Teays Valley Christian School

Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. & The Putnam Herald are pleased to present this week’s Male Gamer of the Week award to Hayden Shelton, junior, Teays Valley Christian School.

By Casey Fallon, Potential Plus Director

Teays Valley Christian Prep is now in their second year of a revamped basketball program led by head coach Ryan Arrowood.  The Lions have a slew of new players which have been recruited from in and out of state.  So far one recruit, guard Hayden Shelton, is paying some nice dividends for the prep team who has moved to 6-2 while playing a difficult schedule.  Hayden, who is a junior at Teays Valley Christian School was recruited by Arrowood from Kentucky.  “It was a difficult decision to leave my home but I had the support of my family, we all felt that it was the best thing for me to do.” says Hayden.

He has certainly made the adjustment as he is getting acclimated with the team.  During a 75-41 win against St. Louis Christian Academy, Shelton dropped 27 points in a fantastic performance.  “it was just one of those games where the shots were falling and I was getting some looks.  The guys kept giving me great opportunities, it was a team effort the whole game,” Says Hayden about his best game so far this season.
The Lions enjoyed quite a bit of success last year as they won the WVCAT championship.  Of course when you have a team constructed with so many talented players coach expectations will be high but Hayden insists that they are taking it one game at a time.  After another win on Tuesday against rival St Joseph’s Central, the lions are at 6-2 and have largely controlled most of their games this year.
Of course one of the difficulties with gaining success with a prep team is not just recruiting the best players, but having athletes who will be able to click once on the court together.  So far it seems like that is the case for Teays Valley. According to Hayden, the teamwork is evident, “We all just have really good chemistry; we’re like brothers.”  Unfortunately, they are going to have some challenges to help replace one leader on the team who is injured and out for the season.  This has forced Hayden to take on more of a leadership role as the entire team tries to come together and continue having a successful 2016/17 campaign.
Coach Arrowood knows what it means to have a team player like Hayden, “He stepped up for us with Danny going down. He was the MVP of that game no question!”
Besides acclimating to a new basketball team with a more demanding schedule, and living with a host family, Hayden has also had to familiarize himself with the demands that TVCS places on their academics.  Shelton, the son of Tara and Kevin Shelton has proven up to the challenge with a 3.0 GPA.  Along with that he is also active in volunteer work through the school.
While he is unsure about where basketball will lead him, Hayden does want to play in college as well as eventually go in to coaching.
