The Lady Lions Girl’s Basketball roared back to life last week picking up two big wins against Parkersburg Christian and Grace Christian by a score of 55-39 and 53-42 respectively. One standout player for the Lions that helped bring a resurgence to the season was point guard Holly Edwards. Edwards netted 31 and 41 points in the two victories. Though the Lady Lions fell in a rematch game to Sherman High School to close the week, the Lady Lions showed great resolve and improved composure in their fifth game of the season.

When asked about what motivates her, Holly responded, “My motivation comes from my teammates. I want to be the best player I can be for my team and get everyone involved on both sides of the ball. Another source of motivation our team has drawn from is someone new to our program, Coach Gabe. He has helped us tremendously in his short time here and we are lucky to have him.”

The Lady Lions are gaining more confidence with every game they play. Head Coach Tim Bailey has always stressed to his players that they need to relax and have fun while competing this year. A problem that many teams face early in the season is keeping their composure and slowing down the game. Last week coach Tim Bailey finally got his girls to buy into his system, and the results are showing. Coach Bailey often will comment on how his girls have continued to improve their chemistry both on and off the court from last season. He believes the support and trust they have in each other will pay off when things get tougher later in the year. The stat column doesn’t lie for Edwards, as she is frequently the top scorer in any game she plays. But if the Lady Lions are going to go far in the post-season, they will have to get more production out of their other players. Edwards believes her teammates are up to the challenge and she is looking to provide them the encouragement to do so. Coach Bailey and the Lady Lions will have to continue to remain focused and put forth a high level of effort to have another great year.

Holly currently has a 4.0 GPA and is the daughter Marnie and Grant Edwards. Holly is also member of the Lady Lions softball and volleyball team, and is involved in National Honor Society and Pep Club. She says she would like to continue athletics in college and would like to study medicine in the future at Marshall University.

Please look for other local high school athletes to be named in next week’s Female Gamer of the Week Sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. & The Putnam Herald.
