Gamers of the Week

Male Gamer of the Week – Isaiah Thomas of Hurricane High School

Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. & The Putnam Herald are pleased to present this week’s Male Gamer of the Week award to, Isaiah Thomas, Senior, Hurricane High School.

By Casey Fallon, Potential Plus Director

For the second consecutive week the Hurricane Redskins put their season on the line, and once again they survived to play another week.  Last week their victim was the St. Albans Red Dragons whom they slayed with a 3 headed monster of their own out of the backfield.  This week they faced the fifth seed University Hawks in the first round of the AAA playoffs.  This time the deciding player was cornerback Isaiah Thomas, and the definitive play was his interception which he returned 100 yards for a touchdown in the 4th quarter.

At the end of the first half Hurricane led 21-14 but the defense really had their work cut out for them in the second half.  The Hawks controlled the time of possession and had several opportunities to erase the Hurricane lead in the second half but were never able to tack on any more points.  Hurricane scored 17 points in the second half despite nearly no offense.  Both touchdowns were the result of interceptions returned for touchdowns.

“We knew that we matched up well with them, as long as we played as a complete unit the whole game we had a chance,” said Thomas of the Redskins mentality entering last weeks’ game.  With a 24 point win, which was much closer than the score will show, the Redskins advance to the second round of the playoffs to face fourth seed Morgantown where they will have a similar plan.

After a 4-0 start Hurricane struggled to find their way against some playoff caliber teams, but with leaders on the team like Isaiah paving the way they have rebounded in a big way.  “We just needed to refocus and everyone started taking practice more seriously.  I just tried to push everyone to go harder every rep.”

As a senior, Isaiah is only playing in his first season of high school football. He has now made one of the biggest plays of the year.  Being a first year player has been trying at times for Isaiah but he says the coaching staff and his dad Terrence have been instrumental in his success.  “The coaches have really taken me under their wing to help me adjust to playing football this year and my dad has always been there to help get me to where I should be.”  Off the gridiron, Isaiah helps with a football camp for young kids that Hurricane has over the summer and is planning on attending West Virginia Wesleyan next year to study criminal justice.
