The Lady Generals Girl’s basketball team is off to a hot start as they are undefeated in their first 5 games of the season winning by an average of 29.2 points per game. Again this season, defensive pressure has been the staple of the Generals game plan. Through five games the Generals have allowed an average of 32.8 points per game. Their full court trapping style defense similar to “Press Virginia,” has created more offensive opportunities off turnovers. One standout player that has helped to create this havoc defense is freshman point guard Zakorrah “ZZ” Russell. In last week’s three wins, Russell averaged 21.3 points against the likes of Wayne, Nitro, and East Fairmont High Schools.

When asked about what motivates her Zakorrah responded, “My teammates and coaches are my main motivation. Whether I’m playing for Winfield or my AAU team I want to put my team in the best position to win. My teammates have helped improve my confidence throughout my freshman season so far, and I owe it to them by playing hard.” When asked about who inspires her she reported, “Renee Montgomery is someone I’ve looked up to since I was little. Realizing she came from the same area I live gives me hope to play on the collegiate and professional level in the future.”

The Lady Generals have a well-rounded club that plays a deep bench due to their style of play. Second year Head Coach Shawn Lucas has started to implement his system at the helm and the results are showing. Though there is room for improvement, their aggressive play on the defensive side of the ball poses many risks such as foul trouble with your star players. Learning how to stay under control when turning the pressure up is key. When asked about Zakorrah’s play this year Coach Lucas said, “She is a fantastic basketball player for her lack of experience on the varsity level. ZZ is a fierce competitor on the court and gets after it in practice. She excels at penetrating the defense and scoring, or finding the open shooter.’’ When asked about his team this year, Coach Lucas said, “We continue to stress the importance of fundamentals to the girls since day one. We look to improve every week in practice and hope it will continue to show in our games.” Coach Lucas’s philosophy of relentless and merciless defensive pressure has already shown to be a good recipe for wins, and the Generals hope to add the final touches on their march toward a successful season.

Zakorrah currently has a 3.8 GPA and is the daughter of Curtis and Myra Russell. Russell plays AAU basketball for the West Virginia Thunder in the offseason, and hopes to continue basketball on the collegiate level for UNC while pursuing a medical degree as a Pediatrician.

Please look for other local high school athletes to be named in next week’s Female Gamer of the Week Sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. & The Putnam Herald.
