The Lady Generals Girl’s basketball team has continued their winning ways last week as they beat cross-town rival Hurricane 58-23. Defensive pressure has continued to be the backbone of the Generals game plan and success. Through 10 games the Generals have only suffered one loss against AA and AAA competition. In their second year of relentless full court pressing, the Generals may be able to coin the nickname, ”Press-Field.” Never the less, the Generals are an intimidating bunch to play. One standout player that has helped to continue their winning ways is senior captain Mary Lawman. Through ten games for the 9-1 Generals, Lawman is quintessentially, “Ms. Versatility,” as she is averaging 8.4 points/game, 5.75 rebounds/game, 5.25 assists/game, and 3.75 steals/game.

When asked about what motivates her Lawman responded, “My teammates and coaches are my main motivation. We treat each other like family, and we all have each other’s backs. When someone struggles we all pick that person up because we know we are only as strong as a weakest link. Also given our style of play we have to depend on more people than the average team. It takes a lot of energy to put constant pressure on teams, but it’s a very exciting and fun way to play the game.”

The Lady Generals second year Head Coach Shawn Lucas was traditionally a men’s athletic coach as he assisted with boy’s football and basketball teams in recent years. Coaching girl’s sports is a different animal and it takes time learn efficient communication and build trust among your players. The Generals have grown from last year’s rookie campaign into a well-oiled machine in Coach Lucas’s second year at the helm. When asked about Lawman’s play this year Coach Lucas said, “She has been a great athlete and fierce competitor. Our girls depend on her, as she is one of our leaders on and off the court for her teammates. As a coach you are lucky to have such a fine an athlete and student like Mary to help lead your team.’’ You can bet that Coach Lucas will continue to dial up the pressure against opponents in the AA ranks. The Generals goal is to make it to the state tournament and march over the competition.

Mary currently has a 3.9 GPA and is the daughter of Charlie and David Lawman. Lawman also participates on the soccer and track teams while also finding time to be apart of Mu Alpha Theta, Beta Club and National Honor Society. Mary has accepted a full athletic scholarship to play soccer at Marshall University and will study exercises physiology with hopes of becoming a Physician’s Assistant.

Please look for other local high school athletes to be named in next week’s Female Gamer of the Week Sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. & The Putnam Herald.
