The Lady Generals Girl’s basketball team is a team to be reckoned with as they won three games last week in dominating fashion. Defensive pressure has continued to be the backbone of the Generals game plan, but their margin of victory this year is 31.7 points/game. Through 14 games the Generals have only suffered one loss against AA and AAA competition. One standout player that has helped to continue their winning ways is freshman guard Mara McGrew. The young guard scored a season high 17 points against Herbert Hoover to close out the week. On the season she is averaging nearly 5 points/game with 4 assists, and 5 steals per game.

When asked about what motivates her Mara responded, DzMy teammates and my family. Being a freshman it takes some time to get comfortable playing varsity level competition, but I believe my past AAU play has prepared me for this level. Our team knows that we have to be successful as a team rather than individuals to achieve our goal as state champs.dz "When asked about her family’s impact Mara responded, DzMy family has been very supportive of my athletic career. My dad coaches a local AAU team that I play on, my older brother plays on the Winfield Varsity boys team, and my mother is always cheering us on."

The Lady Generals second year Head Coach Shawn Lucas is off to a hot start as his squad has surpassed the halfway point in the season. When asked about McGrew’s play this year Lucas said, DzWe had a very skilled freshman class that came from the middle school. They play very well together and are very coachable. Mara is a hard worker and great teammate. I’m excited not only for her but the team in general because we have so many great young players that have great potential.dz The Generals have continued to dial up the pressure on their opponents as they have won 5 consecutive games. The only loss of the season came to last year’s AA state championship team Gilmer County. Using the loss as motivation, the Generals want revenge but know they have to remain disciplined in their attack. The Generals plan to take one game at a time, but ultimately know they have what it takes to make it to state championship game.

Mara currently has a 4.0 GPA and is the daughter of Robin and Bruce McGrew. Mara participates on the soccer and track teams while being also a member of FCA and Fuel Bible Club. In the future, Mara plans on going to college and studying medicine in pursuit of becoming a Pediatrician.

Please look for other local high school athletes to be named in next week’s Female Gamer of the Week Sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. & The Putnam Herald.
