Male Gamer of the Week – Michael Lyons of Hurricane High School

Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. & The Putnam Herald are pleased to present this week’s Male Gamer of the Week award to Michael Lyons, Senior, Hurricane High School.

By Casey Fallon, Potential Plus Director

As the Hurricane High School Redskins swim team prepares for the upcoming championship meets, it seems like they will have at least one person to lean on.  Michael Lyons continues to have a standout season as a senior.  In the recent MLK Invitational he helped propel the Hurricane boys to a second place finish out of thirteen teams and helped Hurricane capture the Putnam County Championship over the weekend.  During the county championship Michael won both events, the 200 I.M. and the 500 free.

Michael has been experiencing success in the pool for a while now. With additional advice from his coaches he has been able to greatly improve this year.  “I just go into each race visualizing how I want to swim.  My coaches have done a great job giving me advice that I can work on in practice.”

While his recent results certainly can testify to Michael’s dedication, his coaches are very impressed with the way he is progressing.  One of Hurricane’s coaches, Kendra White, has noticed his work ethic and said, “He is constantly working hard, giving 110 percent and is very self-motivated.”

Michael specializes in his two events, but has been very willing to compete in others if the team needs him to.  At the MLK Invitational he placed second with a time of 1:58.06 in the 200 yard freestyle. A 59.08 was also good enough for a second place finish in the 100 fly.

The preparation has been very important this year, “I am always planning my races, making sure that I practice what I need to.  Usually I have a time in mind that will put me in contention,” says Lyons.  On top of the mental preparation, Michael endures grueling 2 hour long distance practices for high school training.  During the summer he is going through two-a-days, five or six days each week which includes dry land training and weight lifting.

Currently the 16th ranked swimmer in the state according to SwimWV, Michael is hoping that he can extend his season by placing in the top 3 at regionals. His goal is to win a state championship.  He is hoping to swim at the next level after high school.

Michael currently holds a 3.0 GPA at Hurricane.  He is quick to thank his parents, Patrick and Susan for being so involved with his swimming and getting him to early morning practices and weekend swim meets.
