The Lady Generals softball team opened up their first week of play with 4 wins in just 6 days. The Generals beat the likes of Sissonville, South Charleston, Nitro, and Buffalo High Schools by a combined score of 36-4. Though the Generals fell to Hurricane High School 7-3, the Generals had a successful start to the season. One standout player for the Generals that helped to lead their victorious march was pitcher Emily Moore. Moore had an impressive week as she got it done pitching and at the plate as she threw a no-hitter against Buffalo, and hit the game winning RBI with two outs vs. South Charleston in a dramatic victory 5-4 in eight innings.

When asked about what motivates her Moore said, ”My parents are my biggest motivation. The have given me more support than a daughter could ask for growing up playing sports.” When asked about her team’s goal for this year Moore said, “Our main goal for this year is to win our sectional. We know we will have some stiff competition to achieve our goal, but we believe we can do it.” When asked about her personal goals this season, Moore replied, “Whatever I can do to help our team succeed is my main goal. I believe our team has a greater sense of comradery this year and we all want to play for each other.”

The Lady Generals are returning a large group of last year’s team as they have eight seniors ready to take on the competition. The seniors have put in a lot of work and time throughout past seasons and are ready to blossom in their final year together. The Generals also plan on their underclassman to provide the extra punch to put them in position to win a lot of games. When Head Coach Steve Hensley was asked about his star senior Emily Moore he said, “Emily is such a special player for us. She is a very hard worker and is a great roll model and leader for the younger girls. She is our most consistent player and a great teammate. Her ability to shake off the small stuff and focus to get the job done is second to none.” The Generals are on a mission focused on one unified goal, play for each other and let the pieces fall where they may. Team comradery may be the thing that pushes the Generals to victory when times get tough, but it will ultimately be the catalyst that brings them success.

Emily currently has a 4.0 GPA and is the daughter of David and Angie Moore. Emily is a member of the girl’s basketball team, National Honor Society, and Link Crew, and Beta Club. She will continue softball at West Virginia State University and will study biology or psychology.

Please look for other local high school athletes to be named in next week’s Female Gamer of the Week Sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. & The Putnam Herald.
