The Lady Redskins softball team is undefeated at 11-0. The Redskins are the number one rated team in AAA competition and look to three-peat for another state championship. Last week the Redskins picked up four wins amidst a week where weather caused cancellations around the state. One standout player that has helped to lead the Redskins along the way was freshman pitcher Harley Vannetter. The young pitcher controlled the plate while pitching in all four games only allowing 6 runs in total and pitching a shut out vs. a competitive Cabell Midland team. On the year Vannetter is 5-0, 41 total strikeouts, pitched perfect game in her first state, and has only given up 3 runs on the year.

When asked about what motivates her Vannatter said, ”My parents are by biggest influence. My parents are my main source of support and motivation. My mother has been there for me during the tough times, and my father has sacrificed to be able to come to my games. My other source of motivation comes from my coaches and teammates. Everyone is very supportive and has shown trust in me. Coach Caldwell is an awesome coach that gets the most out of his players while still having fun.” When asked about what her goal is for her freshman season she replied, “Our main goal to win our third straight AAA title. As a first year player I want to play my best because I know the veterans depend on me to play well for our team to succeed. I believe if we play for each other, we can achieve our goals together.”

The Lady Redskins have won their share of dominating victories but they have come through in the clutch to win the close games. In the earlier stages of a long season the Redskins have shown they are a team to be feared, but they have also shown they are still vulnerable. The combo-punch of the senior Katie Adams and freshman Harley Vannetter has proven to be a frustrating outing for opposing teams. When Head Coach Josh Caldwell was asked about his star pitcher he said, “. She is a great kid who works extremely hard.  We are so happy to for her and she’s got a bright future ahead of her at Hurricane and wherever she ends up in college.” The Redskin’s and their fans are hoping they can continue their winning streak to an unheralded undefeated season and third straight AAA state championship.

Harley currently has a 3.8 GPA and plays travel softball for an Ohio-based travel team, The Lady Laser’s Green. She plans to continue playing softball on the collegiate level and wants to major in a health care related field.
Please look for other local high school athletes to be named in next week’s Female Gamer of the Week Sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. & The Putnam Herald.
