The Lady Generals softball team had a productive week as they improved to overall record to 9-3 with three wins in their last four games. The Generals defeated South Charleston, Mingo Central, and Wayne High School by a combined score of 29-1. One standout player for the Generals that led the way was pitcher Cartney Schoolcraft. Schoolcraft’s standout game came against South Charleston where she improved her record as a pitcher to 5-0, struck out 11 batters, all while not allowing a single run. She also got it done at the plate as she went 3-3 with a home run and 3 RBI’s. On the season Schoolcraft is batting .425 and her ERA as a pitcher 2.33.

When asked about what motivates her Schoolcraft said, ”My parents are my biggest motivation. My father has worked with me a lot growing up to improve my skills. I want to play well to make them proud.” When asked about her team’s goal for this year Schoolcraft said, “Our main goal for this year is go to the AA state championship and win it. With the eight seniors on the team we’ve been through a lot of ups and downs over the years. We believe our past experience and drive to win will allow us to achieve our goals.”

The Lady Generals are 9-3 and are considered one of the top AA teams in the state. The Generals have played a number of the top AA-AAA teams that should prepare them for a grueling survive and advance style post-season. When Head Coach Steve Hensley was asked about his team’s play at this point in the season he replied, “I think we heading in the right direction. We have had some instance where focus has been an issue but I think the girls will continue to improve on consistency and execution. When Coach Hensley was asked about his star senior Cartney Schoolcraft he said, “Cartney has improved upon her consistency. Her pitching has become more efficient as she is staying ahead in the count. She’s throwing harder and doing a great job in putting batters in difficult positions to succeed. With Cartney getting early outs in innings, opposing teams have to play on their heels while we can attack.” The Generals have the look of a AA state tournament caliber team, but the Generals know they have to take it one game at a time and focus on the small things to achieve the bigger picture.

Cartney currently has a 3.7 GPA and is the daughter of Jeff and Kathy Schoolcraft. Cartney is part of the cheerleading team, National Honor Society, Link Crew, and Beta Club. She will continue softball at Kentucky Christian University and will study elementary education.

Please look for other local high school athletes to be named in next week’s Female Gamer of the Week Sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. & The Putnam Herald.
