The Lady Generals tennis team wrapped up a successful season with a strong performance in the Cardinal Conference Championship. One standout player for the Lady Generals tennis team that stood out among the rest was senior captain Sydney Miller. The Generals were busy last week as they played Chapmanville, Sissonville, and Charleston Catholic in the Cardinal Conference Championships. Miller placed 1st overall in the 1st seed singles division. Miller is undefeated in 1st seed singles and has only lost one match in 1st seed doubles on the year. Sydney also placed first overall in the 18 and under division of the USTA finals Saturday.

When asked about what motivates her Miller said, ”My parents have been my motivating force. My mother and father have really supported me my whole life with tennis. My mother has been the supportive one and cheerleader and my father has been the one who has inspired me to work hard toward my goals.” When asked about her goals for the year Miller said, “My main goal was to win every match up to the Conference championships. Now that I’ve accomplished that, I want to win every match all the way through the AA state championships in single’s play. The icing on the cake would also be able to win 1st seed doubles.”

The Lady Generals are gearing up for post-season play as Regional, Sectional, and ultimately the State Tournament are fast approaching. When Head Coach Julie Anderson was asked about her team’s play at this point in the season she replied, “The girls have done a great job this year. They are very dedicated and are hard workers. They have trained hard in the off-season and push each other every day in practice. The comradery this team has is one of the key ingredients to their success.“ When Coach Anderson was asked about her star senior she said, “Sydney is such a great competitor and her dedication to the sport is unrivaled. She has trained very hard to get where she is. Sydney has been a great leader for this team and we are proud of all her accomplishments and the support she provides to her teammates.” The Lady Generals tennis team is looking to make some noise in post-season play in route to bring back more state championships for Winfield High School.

Sydney currently has a 3.92 GPA and is the daughter of Jerry and Ginger Miller. Sydney Miller has accepted a scholarship to play tennis at West Virginia State University next fall.
