The Winfield General’s boys track team had an outstanding performance this past weekend at the West Virginia State Track Meet in Charleston, West Virginia. Coming from behind at the end of day two, the Generals went on to dominate the competition with a score of 77, beating out Bridgeport who came in second with a score of 59. This was not just an accomplishment for the boys track team but for the girls’ team as well. It was the first time since 2008 that the Generals swept both state titles in the men’s and women’s track championship. Coach Anderson stated, “They all worked very hard during and in the off season to get better. Going into the state meet, we knew it would be an uphill climb.” The Generals proved their worth and chipped away at the deficit. According to Coach Anderson, “God led this group and we just want to give all the praise to Him.”

In the boys 100 Meter Dash, Trenton Ponsugree placed fifth with a time of 11.31 seconds. In the 200 Meter the General’s claimed two spots in the top ten; Hayden O’Dell and Trenton Pongsugree finished within .53 seconds of each other. Winfield’s Aaron Withrow placed in several events including the 800, 1600, and 3200 Meter Run. Each of his times placed him within the top 10 finishers. Other athletes such as Luke Lumadue, Matt Durgin, Trenten Schubert, Austin Arthur, Owen Baily, Chris Farha, Kurtis Moore, Jacob Durgin, and Tanner Kennedy also had great performances during the state meet.

Winfield not only snatched several individual titles but also won two relay championships. The Generals placed first in the boys 4x100 Meter Relay with a time of 44.36 beating out Keyser who placed with a time of 44.84 seconds. In the boys 4x200 Meter Relay, they, again beat Keyser with a time of 1:33.51. “We had some great performances by our vaulters, sprinters and mid-distance groups which enabled us to take the lead in team points and not relinquish it,” Anderson stated. He is very proud of his team and their accomplishments.

Even though the Winfield Generals team is small, it is packed with talent, as we have seen with the results from their performance this past weekend. We wish them all the best and look forward to seeing them back at the WV State meet next year defending their title.
