The St. Albans Red Dragons started this season with high hopes of making it into the state tournament. Not only did they achieve this goal, but they also made a name for themselves. For the first time in the history of St. Albans High school their baseball team won the state championship. “It was unbelievable, they set some pretty high goals for themselves and worked hard towards them,” said Coach Rick Whitman. “I am so proud of what they have done.”

Unlike most teams in the state, St. Albans was not a senior ladened team. With only three seniors graduating, Alec Hodges, Taylor White and Zain Turley, this team will have a strong base to begin building next year’s team. “The seniors stepped it up, they proved leadership and stability to the team and we couldn’t have done it without them,” Said Coach Whitman.

Going into the final game against Hurricane High School, the Red Dragons, with an astounding record of 32-9, seized control of the game in the third inning. They scored four runs putting them up 4-0 against the Redskins, but they didn’t stop there. By the sixth inning St. Albans was in the lead 8-0 only allowing two runs in the seventh. By the end the Red Dragons had scored a total of 24 runs between the two tournament games and had come out on top defeating the Hurricane Redskins 8-2 for the championship.

Again we want to congratulate the St. Albans High School Baseball team on winning the state tournament for the first time in school history!
