With school starting last week, many of Putnam County’s athletes had to weigh sports and getting back into the groove of school The Winfield Generals girls soccer team start the season off on a good note as they beat AA Bridgeport 4-0 and tied AAA powerhouse Wheeling Park 2-2. One player that stood out for the Generals was freshman forward Ava Hall who netted a goal in her team’s first two games. Not a bad start to her opening week in varsity girls soccer on a team that has won five consecutive state championships on the AAA and AA levels.

Aiming to be a productive player for the Generals, Hall’s main goal for this year is to continue to fill whatever role the team needs to win another state championship. When asked about what she wants to personally accomplish this year she responded, “Bringing another state championship to Winfield is our goal. As a freshman I know my role on the team and hope I can do enough to have a positive impact on my team.’’ When Hall was asked about the changes she has seen from playing middle school and with her travel soccer team she replied, “Varsity level play is much more physical. The girls are much faster, stronger, and more skilled. I believe being able to play early as a freshman will not only help me for the rest of my high school career, but on the collegiate level.’’

Then General’s mission is a to win their sixth straight state championship. Although Winfield has been known to have the ability to reload from year to year, they have had to replace great players from last year’s state championship team. This team is going to have its ups and downs as the season progress, and will have to mature throughout the season if they expect to make it to yet another state championship match. Coach Marshall Hoff and Coach David Baily have a proven method to their madness and aim to get their team back in title contention.

Hall currently carries a 4.0 GPA and is the daughter of Jill and Jamie Hall.  Ava is member of the West Virginia Football Club when she is not playing soccer for Winfield. Ava says she wants to pursue a career in the healthcare industry and hopes to continue playing soccer on the collegiate level.

Please look for other local high school athletes to be named in next week’s Female Gamer of the Week Sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. & The Putnam Herald.
