The Cardinal Conference Boys Golf Championship was held last week at Big Bend Golf Course. The Conference Champion was about as close as it could come as Scott and Wayne High Schools tied for first place, second went to Chapmanville with one shot behind, and Poca finished three shots behind. This marked one of the closest matches in tournament history. One standout golfer that repeated as medalist in the Cardinal Conference was senior Mitch Hoffman who shot a 74 (3 over par). Hoffman had a fantastic day off the tee as he hit 16 fairways and greens. Although Hoffman struggled putting on the day, he was able to will the ball in the cup when it mattered most.

When asked about who motivates him Mitch said, ”Well I always thought of myself as a baseball player when I was younger. It wasn’t until a few of my friends on the golf team convinced me to play and I instantly fell in love with the sport.” When asked about what are his personal goals for the season, Mitch said, “First and foremost I want to finish out strong with my education at Poca. Second I want to make it back to Oglebay for the golf state tournament and compete for the state championship.’’

The Poca Dots boy’s golf team has found success in recent years under head coach Doug Smith. When Hoffman was asked about Coach Smith he replied, ‘’My teammates and I love Coach Smith. We couldn’t ask for a better coach because he treats us so well and makes us better players in the process.’’ The Dots have produced a medalist in the Cardinal Conference Tournament for two years in a row with Hoffman leading the charge. Coming up on September 25 at Bend Golf Course, eight of the nine members of the Cardinal Conference will meet again. This match up will be for the Class AA Region 4 tournament. As history has told it is sure to be yet another tight-knitted competition between the evenly matched schools. State tournament births will be the grand prize and a chance to play at West Virginia’s famous Oglebay Golf Course for a state championship.

Mitch currently has a 3.9 GPA and is the son of Mike and Lisa Hoffman. Hoffman is in the National Honor Society and is also a member of Poca’s boy’s basketball team. Mitch says he is unsure of where he will continue his education, but would like to continue playing golf on the collegiate level.
