The Hurricane boy’s soccer team beat Spring Valley High School 6-1 and also captured the region 4 section 2-championship game against rival Cabell Midland beating them 3-1. Dominating against Spring Valley, the Redskins knew they were going to be in a battle with Cabell Midland. The Redskins opened the match with the first goal, but Cabell Midland answered back to tie the score in a hard fought first half. The second half the Redskins were able to pull away and score two goals to seal the deal. One standout player that helped advance the Redskins to the Regional 4 final was junior forward Alik Assi. Assi scored one goal against Spring Valley to put the Redskins on the board, and helped to capture the win versus Cabell Midland. Assi, who lead his team in total assists, scored the final goal with 5:16 left to put the Redskins safely ahead 3-1.

When asked about who inspires him Alik replied, "My father has always inspired me. When he was younger he played on the Lebanon national team when he was 16 years old. He taught me how to play and I’ve loved the game ever since." When Alik was asked about what motivates his team he replied, ‘’We want to finish strong. We had a successful regular season playing against some of the best competition in the state. Our team is going to have to focus on the present and take one game at a time."

The Redskins have been one of the best teams in the state as they finished the regular season 16-1-4 and ranked number 3 in AAA according to Max Preps. Hurricane had revenge on their minds ever since losing to Parkersburg 0-3, their only loss of the year. When head soccer coach Jim Dagostine was asked about his team’s play this year he responded, ‘’I have been very pleased with this group as they practice hard and have had a terrific regular season. All year the boys have been so dedicated to winning our section as it is one of the toughest in the AAA ranks.’’ When Coach Dagostine was asked about Alik’s play he replied, ‘’Alik is first of all a wonderful young man with great character. His is well thought of in our school and community as an athlete, student, and young man. From a soccer standpoint Alik is a very physical, hardworking, and a skilled soccer player. As a junior he will only get better and I can’t wait to see what he looks like in another year. I am very proud of him and honored to be his coach.” Hurricane looks to beat the team that sent them home last year in the Region 4 championship in 2016 and make a deep run in the state tournament.
Alik has a 4.25 GPA and parents are Osh and Gina Assi. Alik also is on the swim team, DECA, Environmental Club, Math Field Day, Mu Alpha Theta, National Honor Society, and Chem Club. Alik says he is undecided on where he wants to attend college, or if he wants to study medicine or engineering.

Please look for other local high school athletes to be named in next week’s Male Gamer of the Week Sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. & The Putnam Herald.
