Gamers of the Week

Male Gamer of the Week –Alex Hale of Winfield High School

Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. & The Putnam Herald are pleased to present this week’s Male Gamer of the Week award to Alex Hale, Junior, Winfield High School.

By Casey Fallon, Potential Plus Director

On December 17, Buffalo hosted its annual “Barn Brawl” wrestling tournament with 13 competing teams.  The Generals of Winfield High School came away with a big victory beating Man, Buffalo, and Liberty Raleigh in route to the first place finish.  The Generals have a deep team this year with Junior Alex Hale helping to lead the way.   Alex, who was defeated in regionals last year, has been putting in a lot of work over the off season to improve his technique and strength.  “As soon as I lost regionals I went right in to the weight room and started working on getting stronger.  Over the summer I went to a few camps to improve my technique too.”
“I went to Jeff Jordan camp in Ohio and a camp in North Carolina over the summer.  Those definitely helped me improve going in to this year. My parents, Gary and Crystal, spent a lot of time helping me improve, taking me to camps and keeping me motivated.”  Even though he is putting a great deal of effort in to wrestling, Alex is still managing to keep his GPA over 3.0, and find time to volunteer for several causes including Maggie’s Mermaids, General Connect, and helping with the flood recovery at Animal shelters and Herbert Hoover High School.

So far the extra work is paying off.  Hale was unranked at the end of last year and did not make the state tournament. Four meets in to the season he is 23-0 and is becoming one of the breakout stars and leaders for Winfield.  Even Alex’s coach is taking notice, “He has a great attitude and work ethic, going from unranked last year to maybe sixth or seventh.  Ever since he lost that match in regionals he has been on a mission.”
Alex and his teammates have a grueling practice structure that includes 90 minutes to 2 hours of wrestling as well as an hour or so of strength and conditioning every day.  While the workouts and practices have been arduous, all the athletes involved are reaping the benefits as the Generals have multiple wins and other high finishes already.  “We are expecting Alex to do something for us at states this year,” says head coach Mike Cochran. “I think he is going to do some real big thing since he has pretty much dominated all his matches this year.

With a strong start, Winfield is in a good position moving forward.  Not only will they seek a post season run, but they also have a talented, young team who will provide a strong nucleus for several years.
