Male Gamer of the Week – Carson Taylor of Calvary Baptist Academy

Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. & The Putnam Herald are pleased to present this week’s Male Gamer of the Week award to Carson Taylor, senior, Calvary Baptist Academy.

By Casey Fallon, Potential Plus Director

Basketball season is officially under way as several private schools have begun their schedules.  One team to pay attention to this winter are the Patriots of Calvary Baptist Academy.  Always a competitive team in their conference, the Patriots won their pre-season tournament in Parkersburg, and have jumped out to a 7-0 start to the 2016/17 season.
Helping to lead the way is senior point guard Carson Taylor who is averaging over 20 points per contest so far.  While he is putting up big numbers each game, the point guard is far from just a scorer.  He is filling up the stat sheet giving the Patriots a consistent presence on offense and defense.

Taylor’s 27 points led all Calvary scorers in an 85-48 beating of Covenant last week to improve to 6-0.  “We are definitely improved from last year.  We just knew going in to this game that if we stayed sharp on defense and rebounded well we could get the win.”  On Tuesday, the Patriots managed to stay perfect as they downed Cross Lanes Christian 68-51.

As a senior Taylor is taking control of the team.  “I just lead by example; when I play as hard as I can, the team seems to follow. When everyone is putting in that much, especially on defense, we can be a really good team.”  While he is humble about his leadership, Athletic Director Donald Pauley gives him much more credit, “He was at open gym working on his game every chance he had over the summer and all off season.  If he could work with a coach he did, and if he could bring along a team mate, old or new, he would.”

Along with Carson’s tremendous play, he also pointed to the offseason practice in which he and his team was involved.  Spending the extra hours building that chemistry has proven to be important, particularly with two transfers as well as a new head coach coming in this season. While the post season is not on the minds of the players yet, this strong start has the Patriots in good position to make a return trip to the tournament at the end of the year.

Carson’s parents, Tony and Theresa have been big influences on him. They helped him develop after he transferred to CBA as a sophomore, and have been very positive in encouraging him with his athletics as well as his academics.  With a lot of hard work he has improved his GPA up to 3.8.
