The Lady Dragons of St. Albans High School had an impressive outing in the AAA play this season as they made the State Tournament for the first time in nearly twenty years. Among the excitement in St. Albans, two players for the Dragons made the 1,000-point club, senior and first team All-Kanawha Valley center Haleigh Legg, and junior point guard Jaden McDaniels as a second team All-Kanawha Valley. Though the Dragons had their early struggles, they experienced a late season surge as they won six of their final seven games. The Dragons won a sectional and regional championship to make the seventh seed in the AAA tournament. The Dragons fell to Buckhannon-Upshur in the first round, but this was a year to remember and build on for years ahead. When asked about his teams play this year Head Coach Scott James said, “I’m very proud of these girls first for winning the Palmetto division at the Carolina Invitational in Charleston, South Carolina. I’m most proud of how the team came together as one, putting the team ahead of individual goals. Without that happening, we couldn’t have made the run we did.”

The Lady Dots of Poca High School were another team that made a return trip to the AA state tournament after an eighteen-year hiatus. The Lady Dots had an impressive 18-8 record with earning a regional championship win over Mingo Central. The Lady Dots were led by All-Kanawha Valley point guard Casey Skeens and All-Kanawha Valley Head Coach Kenny Sayre. The Dots entered the AA state tournament as the sixth seed, but fell to North Marion High School in the first round. When asked about his team’s success this year Head Coach Kenny Sayre said, “Our team set out this year with the goal in mid to make the state tournament. The girls kept fighting and when injuries occurred the girls stepped up to get us to our goals. We can’t thank the community enough for rallying behind us and giving us the support they did. I can speak for the team that after beating Mingo Central for the regional championship, cutting down the nets is something the girls, assistant coaches, and I will never forget.”

The Lady Generals of Winfield High School had a fantastic season returning to the AA ranks going 23-4. The Generals were led by first team all Kanawha Valley and freshman of the year ZZ Russell and second team all Kanawha Valley senior Mary Lawman. The Generals won their Sectional and Regional Championships in pursuit of capturing the fourth seed in the AA state tournament. Winning their first game vs. Lincoln County, the Generals lost their final four match-up game against the number one seed and eventual runner up Bluefield High School. When asked about his team’s play this season, Head Coach Shawn Lucas said, “We are very proud of our team and their accomplishments. Winning the sectional and regional championships and making it to the Final Four was a great accomplishment. With a team made up of freshman and seniors they demonstrated great chemistry. I think our defensive pressure was the key to our success. We fell a little short in the state semi-final, but we are very proud of all the girls and their great season.”
Congratulations to our local standout teams and please look for other local high school athletes to be named the Female Gamer of the Week for 2017 spring sports sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. & The Putnam Herald.
