Pelvic Health Physical Therapy

Pelvic health physical therapy treats dysfunction of the pelvic floor, and women from all stages of life can benefit from this specialized therapy.

What is the pelvic floor?

This group of muscles supports the pelvic organs, aids in continence, helps balance and manage abdominal pressure during functional tasks, and is involved in sexual function.

Is this treatment right for me?

Pelvic health physical therapy is an appropriate form of treatment for women who are experiencing:

  • Pain or dysfunction during pregnancy

  • Pain after birth (postpartum)

  • Pain during intercourse

  • Pain with functional activity such as lifting

  • Pain during menopause

  • Incontinence or “leaking”

  • Pelvic organ prolapse (POP)

Pregnancy and postpartum

Our prenatal care can benefit women as they prepare for birth, while postpartum therapy can aid in recovery and healing.

Why should I consider pelvic health physical therapy?

  • It offers a less invasive solution to other treatment methods.

  • This type of treatment is comprehensive, incorporating your abdominals, back, pelvic floor and diaphragm in rehabilitation.

  • A pelvic floor physical therapist will work with your referring physician to treat your symptoms and restore pain-free function.

What can I expect at my evaluation?

Given the sensitive nature of these conditions, many patients are nervous to seek care. However, pelvic floor physical therapists are specifically trained to treat these conditions and are highly compassionate individuals. A comprehensive examination includes two main parts:

  • Discussion of your medical history and current symptoms or condition

  • Physical examination that includes assessment of your posture, breathing, range of motion, strength and areas of pain

Certain patients may also benefit from an internal examination. This can provide your therapist with extremely valuable information but an internal examination will only be conducted if needed, and only after your consent.
