Lusher Earns Gamer of the Week Honors

Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. and The Putnam Herald are pleased to present this week’s male Gamer of the Week to Cohen Lusher of Hurricane Wrestling!

Cohen Lusher has had a breakout season this year for Hurricane Wrestling! The sophomore placed fourth at the Region IV championships, qualifying him for the state tournament. “The season has been going well, much better than last year. My coaches and teammates have continued to push me to improve, and the work has paid off. I was able to place 6th at WSAZ’s this year,” said Lusher.

Lusher is 46-12 this season and ranked top-10 in the state in his first full year on varsity.  “As a sophomore, Cohen has emerged as a leader for us. His work ethic inside and outside our wrestling room is high quality. Cohen embodies what we are looking for in our wrestlers. He is as tough as they come, smart, and tactical. He is going to do great things because he is grounded and solid. He is a worker, and we couldn’t be prouder of him,” said head wrestling coach Ryan Wheeler.

Lusher started wrestling in eighth grade, because he was told it would help him with football. He says he likes the self-improvement aspect of wrestling not just on the mat but off the mat as well. He continued saying, “the sport teaches you responsibility and discipline with having to make weight for competitions.”  Lusher attributes a lot of his success to his coaches and says former teammate and current college wrestler Lucas Talley was a great role model for him. In addition to wrestling, Lusher is plays football at Hurricane.

Looking ahead, Lusher says his new goal is to place at the state tournament. Lusher and the rest of the qualifiers will be back in action at the State Tournament February 29th-March 2nd at the Mountain Health Arena in Huntington WV.

Please look for other local high school athletes to be named in next week’s male Gamer of the Week Sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc., and The Putnam Herald.
