Welch Awarded Gamer of the Week Honors

Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. and The Putnam Herald are pleased to present this week’s Female Gamer of the Week to Sophomore, Kylee Welch of the Hurricane High School swim team.

Hurricane’s Redskin Kylee Welch is having a fantastic Sophomore swim season. Welch is 2nd in the MSAC in the 200 free, 4th in MSAC in the 100 back, selected to the Putnam All-County swim team and is 3rd in the region in the 200 free and 100 back! Welch also qualified for states this year in both events! ‘Kylee is lovely, hardworking, and such a pleasure to have on the team. This past weekend was the MSAC meet. Kylee finished 2nd overall with a 2:14:48 in the 200 free and 4th overall with a 1:09:66 in 100 back”. Shelly Bobersky

Welch first got into swimming by joining a summer swim team with her friends when she was just 7 years old, afterwards she joined the Marietta Marlins swim team. Kylee then moved to Hurricane in 2018 and joined the WV Wild and Sleepy Hollow swim team. Welch has been swimming competitively year-round for 8 years and has loved swimming ever since she was a baby. “I love that it’s an individual sport and that I’m in control of how I perform. I love the motivation I get when I do well at meets and I know that my hard work has paid off. I also love my teammates”!

Role models that Welch has in swimming include Katie Ledecky who she’s admired ever since she was little. “She is such an amazing distance swimmer, and distance is definitely my favorite to swim and what I am best at”! When talking about team success this season, Welch believes her team has been successful “because of the positive and fun environment our team has, we all have a fun time at practices and meets and it definitely helps”!

Goals that Welch has set for the remainder of this season include making it to finals at states in the 200 free and 100 back as well as placing top 6 in both. After high school Welch plans to major in radiology and continue her swimming career and compete at the college level. Outside of Hurricane swim Kylee is a member of the WV Wild swim team and the Sleepy Hollow summer swim team. Welch also helps coach for the Sleepy Hollow team as well as teaching swim lessons at the YMCA. Welch will be competing at the WVSSAC State Championship at Mylan Park Aquatic Center in Morgantown on February 14-15th.
