Deel Awarded Gamer of the Week Honors

Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. and The Putnam Herald are pleased to present this week’s female Gamer of the Week to senior, Abigail Deel of the Hurricane High School volleyball team.

Hurricane volleyball is having a tremendous season coming in at 33-13-1 on the season. The Hurricane High School volleyball team won the sectional championship defeating Parkersburg South 3-2 advancing to the state tournament. Hurricane is being led by Middle hitter and blocker #22 Abigail Deel. Deel has about 700 kills for her whole career and is 5th in the state for hitting percentage and 16th in the state for kills this season. “Abigail has been a hard worker and one of our leaders this whole season. She has also been a major contributor in our ability to score points through our offense while also playing a major role in protecting our defense at the net. She has been a fighter with effort and intensity and has done a good job communicating to her teammates.” said head coach Dustin Walls.

Deel has been playing volleyball for around 7 years and first got her start when her mom had her attend a game when she was in the sixth grade, and she has been playing ever since. Deel’s favorite thing about the sport is competing and playing with her best friends. Abigial’s biggest role model is her teammate and fellow middle blocker, Layla Swint. “She is a year younger than me, and I can still learn so much from her and she really helps me to be a better player.”

Deel’s team goal for this season has been reached as her original goal was to make it to the state tournament. Since qualifying for the tournament Deel has a new goal, to win Hurricane’s first state tournament title. Abigial believes her team’s success this season comes from every player on the court working well together, communicating, and having high energy. Outside of volleyball Deel is a member of the National Honor Society, environmental club and on the A honor roll. Deel was also named student athlete of the month for Hurricane High school for the month of October. After high school Abigail plans to attend Marshall University and major in Communication Disorders. Hurricane’s next match will be November 8th at 1:30 versus Hedgesville at the Charleston Coliseum.

Please look for other local high school athletes to be named in next week’s female Gamer of the Week Sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc., and The Putnam Herald.
