Steorts Earns Gamer of the Week Honors
Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. and The Putnam Herald are pleased to present this week’s male Gamer of the Week to Ty Steorts of Hurricane Cross Country.
Ty Steorts of Hurricane Cross Country has been having one of the best seasons ever by a West Virginia runner. At points this season, Steorts had held the #1 spot on Milesplit’s US High School Cross Country rankings. This season, Steorts won the Addidas XC Challenge in Cary, North Carolina in a personal best, school record, and meet record time of 14:37. “The season has been going well, I have had some good performances at the big meets…My teammates are always great at practice, we always have a good mindset about the workout, and Coach Fee is always giving us the right stuff to do and has a great mentality around everything,” said Steorts.
Steorts led the way for Hurricane at the regional meet last week, winning the race in a time of 15:11 to help secure Hurricane’s third place finish to qualify the team for the WVSSAC Cross Country Championships. “What has impressed me about Ty the most this season is not only his dedication and hard work to continue to get better, but also the leadership role he has shown this season with the boy’s team. He has inspired and coached up the boys in both practice and meets helping bring out the best in each of them,” said Head Coach Jimmy Cunningham.
Steort’s says growing up he always did aerobic style activities such as riding bikes, so when he got into middle school his mom, who ran in college, encouraged him to try cross country and since then he just took off with it. He points to his mother as being a huge influence and role model. When discussing what he likes about running, he said that he loves the big race and just competing.
Looking ahead, Steorts will have several big opportunities to compete. The senior will be going for a 3-peat this weekend at the WVSSAC Cross Country Championships hosted by Cabel Midland High School. After States, he is planning to compete in a couple post season meets including Nike Cross Country Nationals in Oregon.
