Comer Earns Gamer of the Week Honors

Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. and The Putnam Herald are pleased to present this week’s male Gamer of the Week to Garrett Comer of St. Albans Baseball.

Garrett Comer of St. Albans Baseball has been leading the way for the Red Dragons this season. The senior ace has a 2.36 earned run average this season, amassing 30 strikeouts in 29 innings pitched. In the first game of the double header against George Washington to decide the sectional champion, Comer pitched a complete game with 9 strikeouts. St. Albans won the game 9-2 and went on to win the second game 9-4 to claim the title and advance to the regional. “Garrett is a great hardworking kid that has been very successful in our program. He is the heart of the team, and he makes us go,” said head coach Rick Whitman.

Comer consistently helps his cause on the mound with his bat. In the George Washington game, he went 2-4 with 4 runs batted in. This season, he has a .373 batting average and 28 runs batted in this season. “This year has been going pretty solid, I started off slow at the beginning, but we really turned it up and played as one,” said Comer. “The goal the rest of the season is to win the game in front of us, and hopefully that takes us to the state tournament and a state title,” he continued.

Comer’s dad introduced him to baseball when he was around 5. He joined the local junior league team in St. Albans and has been playing in St. Albans his entire life through little league, middle school, and high school.  He says his older brother Mathew, who played baseball at Wheeling Jesuit, has been a role model for him and has helped him a lot. In addition to baseball, Comer is a member of the Golf Team, Mu Alpha Theta, and National Honor Society at St. Albans. This fall, he plans to attend Waynesburg University to play baseball and study business administration.

Please look for other local high school athletes to be named next week’s female Gamer of the Week Sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc., and Putnam Herald.
