Johnson Earns Gamer of the Week Honors

Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. and The Putnam Herald are pleased to present this week’s male Gamer of the Week to Andrew Johnson of Winfield Golf.

Andrew Johnson of the Winfield golf team has started off the season strong. The senior shot -1 to finish 7th out of 115 golfers at the Parkersburg Country Club High School Invitational. This tied Johnson’s career best and helped propel the Generals to victory in a highly competitive 29 team field. “The season has been going really well so far. We play really well as a team and have been improving every week.” said Johnson.

Johnson has had an impressive stint with the Generals. He is a 3-time state qualifier and key contributor in the Generals back-to-back runner up performances at the state championship. When discussing the rest of the season, Johnson focused on the team goal of winning a conference, regional, and state championship this year. Winfield is primed to make another run at a state title with their top 4 golfers returning from last seasons.

“Andrew has always been a valuable member of our team. He can always be found encouraging others, even our opponents during competitions. He is a true leader for the Generals and it has been a true pleasure to not only coach him for entire high school career, but to watch him grow and improve immensely throughout his journey,” said head coach Dean Bowers.

Johnson started playing golf at the end of his eighth-grade year during COVID when everything else was shut down. “I started playing in tournament and just found something I love to do,” said Johnson.  When discussing role models, Johnson pointed to his dad who took him to the course,  and supported him at all his tournaments.”

In addition to golf, Johnson is a member of National Honor Society and Pep Club at Winfield. Johnson plans to play golf in college, and is still going through the recruiting process.
