Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. and The Putnam Herald are pleased to present this week’s Female Gamer of the Week to Senior, Sydney Young of the St. Albans High School softball team.

Third baseman, #2 Sydney Young of the St. Albans high school softball team is having a great start to her senior season. Young currently has a batting average of .607, on base percentage of .738, 5 homeruns, 11 RBIs, and 18 runs scored.  Coach Ali Haynes “Grit, determination, dedication, and leadership. All qualities Sydney completely embodies on and off the field. She has been an excellent role model for our team, and I know she’s going to have a great impact as a player at the collegiate level for Ohio University! I’m very honored to have been able to coach her for the last year here at SA”!

Young first got her start with softball at the young age of 5 playing T-ball for the South Charleston Little League. “My parents signed me up because I did not like the other sports I had tried previously. I played every season and eventually began to take lessons and began travel ball.” Young plays third base but has also played short stop and enjoys playing anywhere on the field. A role model that Young has is her dad, “he is very passionate about everything he does and seeks to do everything to the best of his ability. He is constantly “all in” for me whether it be in softball or life, and I strive to be like that for my teammates and everyone around me”.

When discussing the success of her team Young stated “My team has been super successful this year because we focus on doing our job. Everyone has a different role and has different strengths and weaknesses; therefore, when we focus on completing our tasks that we can control we are very successful. Also, our pitcher Ava Bentley has been dominating this year and instills a lot of confidence”. Individual goals that Young has for this year include to grow mentally and be a positive leader and good influence on her teammates. Team goals include getting better each day and to win each pitch that her team is faced with.

Off the field Young is a member of the National Honor Society, Anchor Club, Mu Alpha Theta, Rho Kappa, Beta Club, and CAUSE Club. Young has 150 hours of community services honors varying from volunteering for athletic concession stands, highway trash pickups, Candle Light Ceremony in SA, and more. Sydney plays travel ball for the Tampa Mustangs, has won the 2021 PGF National Championship and 2021 USA National Championship. For St. Albans Young was selected as First Team All-State in 2022 and 2023. After high school, Young will be attending Ohio University to continue her academic and athletic career. While attending the university she will study sports management.

The Red Dragons will be back in action Wednesday April 17th at 6pm versus the Cabell Midland Knights.
