Anderson Earns Gamer of the Week Honors

Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. and The Putnam Herald are pleased to present this week’s Female Gamer of the Week to Senior Alexandra Anderson of the Hurricane High School Basketball team.

Alex Anderson's basketball journey began at a young age, thanks to her grandfather, who sparked her love for the game. When he would babysit her, they would always spend time dribbling the basketball together, and it’s in those moments that Alex’s passion for basketball took root.

“I got involved with the sport because me and my grandpa always used to dribble basketball when he would babysit me,” she recalls. “I’ve been playing since I was six years old.”

Now, as a senior and a star shooting guard for the Hurricane Girls Basketball team, Anderson has grown into one of the top players in the state. What she loves most about basketball is the bonds she’s formed over the years. For her, it’s not just about the game—it’s about the relationships that have shaped her journey.

“The thing I love most about the sport are the bonds I’ve formed,” Alex says. “It’s the camaraderie with teammates and coaches that makes it so special.”

This season, Alex and her team have set their sights on a major goal: making it to the state championships. With hard work and dedication, they hope to give it their best shot. “My team goals are to make it to states this year and give it our best shot,” she says.

As a four-year starter and team leader, Alex has been a crucial part of the team’s success. Coach Young speaks highly of her contributions, praising her as a top talent who has helped shape the Hurricane Girls Basketball program.

“Alex is a 4-year starter and a big reason for the success and growth of the Hurricane Girls Basketball program,” Coach Young says. “She’s scored almost 1,200 points and made 200 three-pointers in her career, which is an impressive accomplishment. She also made a school record 10 three-pointers in a game at Ripley this season. She’s one of the best shooters in the state, and I’m proud to have coached her these last few seasons.”

Alex’s skills on the court speak for themselves. This season, she’s averaging 16 points per game, and her 1,000th career point came in a home win against Ripley. She also recently won the MSAC 3-point competition and scored 22 points in a victory over Parkersburg. Her achievements are a testament to her hard work and talent.

Off the court, Alex is involved in a variety of extracurricular activities, including Raze Club, the Prom Committee, and the National English Honor Society. Her list of accomplishments doesn’t stop with basketball—she’s also an accomplished softball player. Alex has been named First Team All-State for softball and earned All-Kanawha Valley Team recognition.

“My grandparents are my role models because they do so much for me and they don’t have to. They’ve always supported me for everything I do,” Alex shares. Their unwavering support has been a source of strength for her throughout her athletic career.

Looking ahead, Alex plans to attend West Virginia University and major in biology. As she prepares for the next chapter, her focus remains on finishing her high school basketball career strong, aiming for a successful season with her team.
