Cochran Earns Gamer of the Week Honors
Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. and The Putnam Herald are pleased to present this week’s Female Gamer of the Week to Senior Kiera Cochran of the Buffalo High School Softball team.
For senior second baseman Kiera Cochran, softball has been more than just a sport — it’s been a lifelong journey of growth, resilience, and family. “I started playing sports when I was around 4 and sports have always been a big part of my life growing up,” Cochran said. “Since I started tee ball when I was 4 and I have played ever since then.”
Now in her senior season, Cochran has emerged as one of the cornerstones of her undefeated high school softball team. Known for her powerful bat, steady glove, and exceptional leadership, Cochran has posted a remarkable .620 batting average this season, adding 2 home runs to her already impressive total of 19 career home runs. “I play 2nd base; however I have also played at 1st and 3rd as well. I am number 15,” she said.
But beyond the stats, it’s the bond and lessons she’s gained through the game that mean the most. “What I love most about softball is the family it has given me,” Cochran said. “Softball has taught me so many life lessons and because of that it has helped me persevere in my everyday life from different difficulties and adversities I’ve faced.”
Her dedication to the team is clear, and her goals are set. “My team and I’s goal this season is to make it back to the state tournament, where we hope to win this year!”
That level of commitment and drive hasn’t gone unnoticed by her longtime coach. “I have had the pleasure of coaching Kiera all 4 of her years,” said Head Coach Bill Rasnake. “Kiera is one of three seniors that has led us to an undefeated season thus far. Her leadership on and off the field is unmatched. She possesses power and hits for average and has a fantastic glove. She deserves every accolade.”
Cochran attributes much of the team’s success to the camaraderie and unselfish spirit that defines the group. “I believe our team has been successful this season due to the team chemistry we have,” she said. “Our team gets along off the field and I think that plays a big part when we are on the field. I believe that everyone on our team is a team player and that we all want what is ultimately best for the team!”
Academically, Cochran shines just as brightly, maintaining a 4.0 GPA while preparing for her future. “My plan after high school is to attend West Virginia State University to pursue a degree in elementary education,” she said.
As she reflects on the people who’ve influenced her most, Cochran credits the coaches who have stood by her throughout her softball journey. “I have a couple of different role models but my biggest role models are the coaches I’ve had throughout the years of softball that have pushed me and helped me get to be where I am today.”
With the state tournament in sight and her final high school season unfolding, Kiera Cochran continues to lead by example — driven by passion, grounded by purpose, and inspired by the teammates and coaches who’ve helped shape her path.
