State Champions Hurricane High School Boys Tennis

Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. and The Putnam Herald would like to Congratulate Hurricane Boys Tennis on their State Championship!

Hurricane Tennis concluded a dominant season on Friday winning the team state championship over Cabell Midland 4-1. The team consisting of Jacob Smolder, Zach Giertz, Elias Kave, Kellen Pauley, Grant Knapp, and Blake Shamblin went undefeated (21-0) this season on their way to the State Championship.

“One reason this team is so good is each player is practicing with the best team in the state, therefore as they compete with each other their level of play has to go up as well as their confidence,” said head coach Andy Ball.

Hurricane has won 2 of the last 3 state championships, and has made the finals both years of the new format that started in 2023.

Individually Jacob Smolder won the AAA singles title and the double team of Jacob Smolder and Zach Giertz won the AAA doubles title.  Smolder and Giertz also earned first team all-state honors.
