State Champions Winfield High School Girls Softball

Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. and The Putnam Herald would like to congratulate Winfield Softball on their State Championship!

The Lady Generals softball team has secured back-to-back state titles this 2024 season with a 5-2 win over the Keyser Golden Tornado’s. The Generals finished the season 26-9 winning 24 of the last 26 games. “This year’s team had a tremendous and exciting season. We lost 6 seniors starters from last year’s state championship team, this year we felt we could be pretty good defensively and the pitching would get better as the season went along” said head coach Steve Hensley. When discussing pitching Mattie Carroll pitched well down the stretch for the Winfield Generals. Senior shortstop Alex Hurley played well in the infield for Winfield.

Getting contact with the ball this season is something that came easy to the Lady Generals. “Our overall hitting was good, getting through the first 2-3 weeks was important for us. The team really came together well in early April and continued to improve throughout the season-all the way to the state tournament” Steve Hensley. Previous Gamer of the Week Evie Loyd “leadoff hitter has been a difference maker at the top of our lineup.” Sophomore Emeri Nelson had a great tournament this season as well as senior Kennedy Schilling who hit very well for the Generals. “Having many contributors throughout the season was the biggest overall strength of the team.”

“I’m proud of their accomplishments, it was a collective team effort for sure.  Our seniors played well in the tournament and that was big for us. Everyone played a big part in this season, and they were playing great at the end of the year-that’s the most impressive thing about this team. They played their best at the end of the year, getting the best results they could get.”
